So I demand to register my out of state auto here. I have a few questions:

i) What is the proper society of things to practice: Smog Test, Registration, and so Driver'due south License?
two) What is a cheap place to go a smog test? Something well-nigh downtown LA or within 25 miles.
3) Do I demand to get an inspection of some sort done?
iv) Which is the best dmv to go to? I know some have ridiculous wait times, etc.
5) Why do I demand to register with the dmv website? Do they track me somehow?

I know a lot of info is present on the http://www.dmv.ca.gov/ webpage, only information technology's not very articulate.

There is no special society that you need to follow, other than you need to become your car registered in CA, before y'all tin can get a CA smog test done. Personally, I would get the drivers license commencement, but merely later I have established my residence and employment. And so become for the car registration and later the smog. The smog volition be required to complete the registration and will be updated through the smog machine at the auto repair shop that does the smog test.
The land does have a time limit to get your car registered in CA and for you to go a CA driver's license. This mainly applies to you if you get a job here. Once you lot are employed in California, the clock really starts ticking. Otherwise you lot can only say that you are 'visiting', which is substantially probably true as you are looking to find a place and settle in to obtain employment. If you auto is out of state, you can have to pay a special tax that applies to out of state vehicles. This is to thwart people that go out of state to purchase cars to try and avert the higher CA sales tax and other fees.
First of all, your car will accept to be inspected. There are places in the US, where they have no auto smog inspections at all, so the regime will want to know that your automobile meets legal specifications. I hope this helps.
Evidently, some of the details depend upon the year of your automobile, considering if its newer than 3 years, you probably don't demand a smog test. All of these details are specified on the CA DMV website.

Thanks Everyone! I only went and the society goes like this:

one) Get Smog Test Washed. I paid $35 at Exxon.
2) Brand DMV Appt.
3) Get Verification done outside of DMV just earlier Appt.
four) Become into Appt with: Registration class filled out from website, Mileage of car, Proof of insurance, Registration from former state, Driver's License from former state, Car's Title (they send you a new one in 4 weeks), License Plate removed from your car after you park.
5) Pay with Debit Bill of fare or Bank check (they don't accept credit bill of fare)

The whole procedure took me virtually an hr but only because I went to counter first, then I did my verification, then I had to come dorsum to the counter again.
